Interviewing Myles Watson, founder of Araknid Clothing
Tell us about you, what’s your name? Where are you from? What do you do?
My name is Myles Watson and I’m 19. Currently, I live in Berlin, I’m from London, UK. I am a DJ and producer and I moved to Berlin to do a degree in Electronic Music Production and Performance. I have been Djing for about six years and producing for five.
I have also been skateboarding since 2011 and I had grown to love certain skate brands and I always thought how cool it would be to have my own brand and see people wearing my designs, so I took some business courses, learnt how to use photoshop and illustrator and here I am.
What about your brand? What’s its name? What makes it unique?
My brand is called Araknid, it is the result of 4 years of hard work. The name came from the logo which started off as a symmetrical tribal design which looked like it had eight legs, but it didn’t look like a spider hence Araknid. After doing some research into branding and brand recognition, I realised the design was too complicated so after 3 redesigns I ended up at my final logo.
What makes my brand unique is the way my products are sold. Products are pre-ordered then manufactured and distributed once a threshold is reached, this allows me to sell many different designs while still being a small and new company. Also, my brand is all about collaborations and I have many collaborations with other brands in the works.
If it were a person, what would he/she be like?
I think the person would be someone who is interested in simple designs, loves to be out and about, and likes to have things that not many other people have or have seen, maybe like black and white photos and grunge fashion.
Simplicity is key, describe your brand in three words:
Simple. Quality. Choice
For how long have you been selling t-shirts? Any remarkable story you learnt on the way? Any advice for beginners?
I haven’t been selling t-shirts for long, but I have taken the time to put in good planning and business strategy. So my advice to anyone starting their own brand is to take your time and make sure it’s all done right, the basic foundation should be there for your company.
Do your market research, learn about starting and maintaining a business and have some savings that you can use to put into your business, you have to spend money to make money. Always sell quality your brand is a reflection of you, and most importantly make sure you’re doing this for the right reasons, people who are passionate will have more success than those who are looking to make some quick money.
A key question, why should people be interested in your brand?
If anyone is interested in extreme sports i.e skateboarding or likes clean simple designs, limited edition products and collabs with amazing artists Arakind is the way to go. If you like VANS, DC or Stüssy you’ll like Araknid. I have some big plans for my brand that will hopefully set us apart from the competition.
Brilliant! Nice talking to you! Before you go, let’s shoot some quick questions!
- Dogs or cats: Cats because they’re independent and purring helps me to relax, it’s a very soothing sound
- Apple or PC: Apple, build quality and presentation is second to none, although it is very overpriced
- Football or basketball: Basketball all the way. #KurokoFlex
- Coffee or tea: Coffee, a must have for my profession
- Beach or forest: Forest, there’s a lot to explore and I hate getting sand everywhere
- A colour: Purple
- A place: Japan
- A quote: “Make your own luck” – Rob Dyrdek
