Hi there, t-shirt friends! Here we are again with a brand new edition of our awesome #TshirtTuesday series! Today we bring you something that will catch your attention, for sure. You might hate it, you might love it, but it won’t leave you indifferent.
I must admit that when our friend Jacob reached out to us for first time I was a bit sceptic. Perhaps his brand was a bit too much for a traditional printing company… but then again. Have we ever been traditional?
We decided to give it a try and in the end we got a really nice addition to the series, on top of making a new friend (he’s even sending over some samples!). Come and meet Moist Junk! The boldest t-shirt brand on the Internet!
Interviewing Jacob, founder of Moist Junk
Tell us about you, what’s your name? Where are you from? What do you do?
My name is Jacob Kubon, I am a comedian located out of Los Angeles, CA. Originally from the State of Michigan, the Mitten state (apparently it’s called that because it looks like a mitten, but the Upper Peninsula is not considered in this nickname. I guess if it was, it may be nicknamed something else like the Mongoloid Hand State, or the Hand Tickling a Jackalope’s B-Hole State, which does not conjure the same feelings or imagery as is probably intended). Whatever the case, that is where I am from and will forever consider home.
Outside of being the Owner/Operator/Lead Designer of MOIST Clothing and Junk, which is a new endeavor, I am primarily a Stand Up Comedian. I try to stay as busy as possible with comedy in general, and MOIST has been a magnificent new medium to work with.
What about your brand? What’s its name? What makes it unique?
My newborn brand is named MOIST Clothing and Junk, and our tagline sums us it up pretty well; Not always the MOIST marketable, but always the MOIST memorable.
We are unique in the sense that we are based on a word that conjures up immediate feelings and reactions from everyone who reads it. Personally it is one of my all-time favourites, but for MOIST it brings up that gross, tingly, shudder feeling you get when you are in a bathroom and can hear far too much of what is going on in the stall next to you.
Aside from the name, in our designs we strive to keep a light-hearted, cartoony, goofball feel while at the same time delving into the deep dark, gross, and haggard side of everything around us; like an uncle at a family gathering (often inappropriate, but always fun and memorable) or how some people find opossums cute (I’m an otter man myself, but who am I to judge).
If it were a person, what would he/she be like?
If MOIST was a person it would probably be (as mentioned in the previous question) an inappropriate uncle. Uncle MOIST. I like the sound of that and can’t wait to see what he brings me for Christmas this year (I hope it wasn’t like the time he coerced me into taking “Underwear Model” photos like last year, though they were Calvin Klein and my Online Dating game has never been the same).
Simplicity is key, describe your brand in three words.
Lovable, Haggard, MOIST,.
For how long have you been selling t-shirts? Any remarkable story you learnt on the way? Any advice for beginners?
We launched our first product on the 8th of February, and have been releasing another product every day for the past three weeks (21 products, 21 days).
No remarkable stories yet, but it has been great to see how many people enjoy our demented sense of humor. Also, our very first shirt purchase was from a fellow comedian back in Michigan. He wore said shirt at a recent comedy competition and is now going on to the Semi-Finals, so I guess if you break it down, buy our merchandise and you’ll win at everything you do; and if you don’t, at least you’ll look MOIST doing it.
The only advice I would give to anyone considering getting in to the “t-shirt business” is to just do it already. No one is gonna do it for you, dive right in. The best way to learn how to swim is by throwing yourself over the side of a boat in to a deep, terrifying lake (or at least that’s how my dad taught me). You’re gonna struggle at first, desperately gasping for air as your lungs fill with water, but soon you’ll make it to the surface for that reviving breath of air that eventually helps you cough up the water you recently swallowed in the depths. And once you get those little legs kicking and learn to swim, you’ll realize just how satisfying and refreshing it is. Pay no mind to the things that brush against your toes, it is no water monster, tis just a bit of seaweed…or maybe a large fish with large teeth and a hunger for human flesh!!! Kick those little legs as hard as you can!!! Flail about and pray that you do not look like a dying animal, the kind that large fish enjoy munching on. And if you are one of the lucky ones, you will make it to shore just in time to wrap up in a towel, dry off, and cover yourself in one of the very t- shirts you have created (you can also use said shirt later at home to dry your tears as you rock back and forth in the fetal position, sobbing over the memory of how you learned to swim). Memories…
