Interviewing Amina, founder of Sugar High Sugar Low
Tell us about you, what’s your name? Where are you from? What do you do?
My name is Amina Mahdi-Gonzalez. I’m from Manchester, UK. I am a diabetes blogger and designer. My aim is to share my experiences with the condition and by doing so, spread more awareness of diabetes.
What about your brand? What’s its name? What makes it unique?
Brand Name – “Fighting Diabetes One Sugar at a Time” My brand is unique in that, all my artwork is related to daily challenges I face as a diabetic. My sugar cube design combined with my name (Sugar High Sugar Low) are able to tell the story of some of the battles I face with this condition.
If it were a person, what would he/she be like?
If it were a person it would be, positive, happy, not afraid to educate others (about diabetes), patient, brave and most of all strong in mind and body.
Simplicity is key, describe your brand in three words:
Bold, simple, playful
For how long have you been selling T-shirts? Any remarkable story you learnt on the way? Any advice for beginners?
I’m very new to the T-shirt selling game, but I have learnt a lot in the short time I have been designing and selling. Make sure you have a strong design. Learn a lot about who your target audience might be. I started by blogging so people were able to get to know me and what I do beforehand. I then introduced my drawings on all social media platforms and interacted with my followers. I built up a big hype around my drawings and my determination to advocate for diabetes. People started asking about my drawings and if they might be available on a T-shirt. Think about pricing and if that would fit with your audience also the colours you choose to use in your design may also affect costs. Printing style etc….
Key question, why should people be interested in your brand?
I think people should take an interest in my designs because, diabetes is something that affects many people world-wide. It is still a condition that is still misunderstood and many myths and stigmas have been attached to it. By putting my T-shirt designs out there, it will make people question diabetes. It will help them learn more about the condition and I hope put an end to some of these misconceptions.
Are you on Social Media? Where can we find you?
