This time around, we’re interviewing Matthew Brewis, an interesting folk from Australia whose love for maths and science, combined with a recent entrepreneurial desire, inspired him to start up his own t-shirt brand, Wise Guy Society!

Interviewing Matthew Brewis, founder of Wise Guy Society
Tell us about you, what’s your name? Where are you from? What do you do?
Alright, well I’m a 22 year old Australian currently living in the United States of America putting the finishing touches on my Engineering degree! Originally from a small town called Tumut, I moved to the coast of Wollongong to pursue my passion for both science and maths. It was only until the end of last year that I began to feel this entrepreneurial spirit churn inside me. I discovered the rising phenomenon of drop-shipping and fulfilment whereby you are able to operate a business from the comfort of your lounge room without having to hold any of the inventory or deal with any of the shipping; and I looked to tees to apply this to.
What about your brand? What’s its name? What makes it unique?
Called ‘Wise Guy Society’, the name was inspired by the first design of an owl, however the overarching theme of the brand is to inspire those interested in science and to not be afraid to show their passion for it. This is true for aspiring entrepreneurs as well! After all, some days you need a little bit more motivation than others. This is the future of Wise Guy Society.
If it were a person, what would he/she be like?
I think they would almost have an introverted personality, working hard on the sidelines while everyone else is partying.
Simplicity is key, describe your brand in three words.
Motivation. Science. Knowledge.
For how long have you been selling t-shirts? Any remarkable story you learnt on the way? Any advice for beginners?
Only recent to the industry! It was shortly after I arrived in the States this year that I started working on this brand. I couldn’t pinpoint an exact story, other than the fact that anyone wishing to get involved in the industry must go through a massive learning curve early on in the beginning. If you persist through this initial 2 or so weeks, you will come out the other side thinking you have made some serious progress!
For people starting out, ask yourself, what is motivating you? Harness this and use this to drive yourself each day. You will know when you have it because it almost feels like every minute not spent on the project is time wasted. After all, an entrepreneur’s worst enemy is time. So if you are thinking about starting out, stop thinking. Act.
Key question, why should people be interested in your brand?
Have you ever pondered over a quote one day or watched an inspirational video and said to yourself, today is the day that everything is going change. The hope is to give people a little nudge in the right direction, and inspire others to take action.
The broad field of science is also major passion of mine and I hope to encourage others to take an interest in it if they already haven’t.
